I came across this bracelet at
an estate auction and took an instant liking to it, though I didn't have a clue
about its origins.
I have since learned that it is a Damascene bracelet, made in Toledo, Spain.
Damascene is a designing technique that was introduced to the people of Toledo
by the Moors, a technique that results in the very pretty designs seen on the
many variations of Damascene jewelry. Those lovely bird and flower designs you
see are actually gold wire pounded into the black background and if you study
the links closely, you can see just what an art this is. The result is a very
rich-looking but not overly ornate bracelet.
This pretty bracelet is a good length for a larger wrist: it's just under 8 1/2"
long. Each oval link is 5/8" long by nearly 1/4" wide. It has a very secure lock
and safety chain.
For an estate piece, it's in remarkable condition: The undersides, the links and
the clasp are all a shiny gold color with no nicks or dents.
While Damascene jewelry isn't that hard to find, one thing it is, is pretty. I'm
sure whoever buys this one will love it. See more photos of this bracelet in our
